First things First

Basic info:

Traveling to Peru for a month and some to volunteer through Cross Cultural Solutions. I am not sure what my exact position will be but in general, I am teaching children English in the morning and playing soccer and doing crafts in the afternoon.

English has become a class divider in the bicultural society that has emerged as Peru as gained some economic, political stability. The upper class, is mostly white and speaks Spanish and English. The lower class is made up of ethnically mixed and indiginous people. They speak Quechua (from the Inca) and Spanish but are cut off from the upper echilons by a number of ceilings, a predominant one being language. Helping to teach younger children English will give them a wider range of educational, employment, and social opportunities.

I will be in Peru by Nov. 2 and my program lasts 4 weeks. I am planning on staying awhile longer to travel.

Current Mission:

Spanish and Money!

Trying to learn Spanish! I have a lady that speaks to me in my car and she is very helpful... Yeah for Spanish on CD!

Fundraising: Running a Raffle for a Free Dinner Date with your choice of a few of my fabulous friends, Sarah Tak, Sarah, Ariel, Cameo, Ryan and Grant. I owe them a BIG thanks! I just got started, but so far tix sales are going well and it's been fun... New contest: to the friend who sells the most tix: a nice bottle of wine to go with your dinner date!

I'll keep updating as the trip gets closer.
If you're reading this, thank you for your support!

Marg,

I'm very proud of you. Having your mom there should be a great treat for both of you, I would think. Keep your blog up to date. I have it bookmarked.
